Bandwidth Bandits Beware!

My post about the 5 Minute Mug Cake has proven to be one of my more popular posts here at baldheretic.com. I am amazed by the number of hits it receives from people who have been sent the link via e-mail, found it referenced on another blog or just plain search the term “5 minute mug cake” in Google. Perhaps I have missed my calling and need to consider a career in esoteric food blogging or something.

I got a notification of a pingback to the post from a post @ a blog over at blogger.com.

Of course I had to go check it out.

So there’s my picture right there on his page. No credit, no thanks, no nothing. And to make matters worse, the image is just linked from my server. He didn’t even have the courtesy of copying the image to his own server to host it.

OK, it’s not one of my masterpieces. It’s a throw away shot of a 5 Minute Mug Cake Cynthia, Jim and I made on a lark. Still, it’s MY throw away shot of a 5 Minute Mug Cake and who the heck does he think he is just slurping my bandwidth like that?

Further reading of his blog shows his site is a commercial site where he is selling advertising space.

And to add insult to injury, he’s a conservative.

GET-A-ROPE!

Ok, no rope. How about a clever mod-rewrite in my .htaccess file? That I can do. It’s already in place blocking Myspace because of all those juveniles hijacking my images to show their friends how clever, witty and urbane they are.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?/myspace.com [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?annoying-hotlinker.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ /message-to-you-rudy/shove-it.jpe [L]

So now when you load his page there’s a little message from me:

Note that I have credited the Johnny Cash photo properly to give Jim Marshall his due for his amazing photo. I am unaware of any copyrights in existence, but will happily remove it should any come to light.

Take heed IntarWeb users. If you want to steal images, there’s not much preventing you from doing so. But should you decide to be a low down snake in the grass, be sure and make your own copy and host it yourself. Otherwise we image owners/hosters might radically change the image to suit our own needs.

Just ask the (hopefully ex-) Webmaster @ Savemart Center what can happen when you do something so inconsiderate.

Please note, friends and family who use my images for non-commercial purposes are exempt from my scorn and my wrath.

I love torturing bandwidth and art thieves with fun .htaccess tricks. My standard deterrent image is a seizure-inducing magenta/green flashing “IMAGE AND BANDWIDTH USED WITHOUT PERMISSION OR CREDIT”; there are a few other specialized ones as the situation warrants. I have at times used pictures of the contents of my cats’ litterbox.

Every once in a great while I get a nastygram from a hotlinker. It’s hilarious.

Checked out the offending site. Seems the image is still there? However, the author has linked to your article in his post so it seems that he may be thinking, since the said photo belongs to the author of the article, he did not seem it necessary to credit the photo to you.

However, in retrospect, he should have credited anyway since it does hog the bandwidth (twice since he also linked to the site). Perhaps he thought he was indirectly crediting you with the photo by linking to your article?

Oops. Just reloaded and now the Johnny cash pic is up. :)

Actually a much nicer response than the guy who goatse’d myspace by replacing a hijacked image on his server with THAT photo.

Brilliant and evil. Two great traits that go great together.

Dude, you rock. I’m setting up my .htaccess to pay some sites back as we speak.

Looks like you got him, Jay. At least he has apologized and taken the link down.

Thanks, Jay! Best laugh I’ve had all week!
