Back in the day when I was doing Wake Up And Smell The Coffee on KPFT I discovered a band called Bongos, Bass and Bob which featured magician Penn Jillette on bass, and his friends Dean Seal on bongos and Rob Elk on guitar.
The album was called Never Mind The Sex Pistols and featured a song called The Thorazine Shuffle.
It was requested often and even to this day I still get the occasional e-mail from someone who tells me how they remember that song and how much they enjoyed hearing it on my program, all those years ago…

I have the complete BB&B album in mp3 form if you can use it. Did you know that Teller designed the cover AND provided keyboards and (gasp!) backing vocals?
I’ve said it before, but you DO need to do a Smell the Coffee revival set on Sound Awake one of these Tuesdays. The time is ripe.
Cheers,
Jeffrey
I’ve been searching for a copy of BB&B’s Thorazine Shuffle for years!!!!!! This morning I finally found a copy, and wouldn’t you know it, I got it from Jay Lee from Technology Bytes!
This is Christopher of the Famous Earthbus that visited you guys a few years ago…. its a small world damnit.
Keep up the Geek.

I heard this song on KGRG in Puyallup WA back in 99 or 2000. I taped it but my tape ran out before the song was over. It has driven me absolutely nuts ever since (only having the first verse of the song). I didn’t find out what it was or who sang it until about 2006, and have been unable to purchase or download the song until I stumbled upon this page 02/28/08.
All I can say, is thank you for finally helping me catch my musical white whale.
I miss Wake Up and Smell the Coffee, we always listened to that on Friday mornings when driving into school. I still remember the time you called the kids out for being closed minded and not taking into account the fact that some fans of the same music have jobs and so can’t dress/look as them . . .

I have passively sought this song for years.
The college radio station in Lubbock, Texas, played this song A LOT during the mid-1990s. I remember hearing it at night when I was driving home from work.
Excellent find. This really is the best Christmas ever.
Same situation Miguel, my dad and I have been looking for this song since my 6th-7th grade years (late 90′s). Shame KTXT looks gone for good.
So, I have been searching for this song for months and months. Thank you!
OMG!!! I haven’t heard this in years!!! And like Rob and Frank I too first heard it on KGRG waaaay back, even had most of it recorded on the end of a cassette tape! Somehow over the years it was lost, along with my memory, and I couldn’t remember who the heck did it! Now I’ve caught my musical white whale too..well..one of them anyway…
Hey, on the off chance Rob and Frank, another KGRG listener, or anybody that knows sees this, I’m also tryin to find out who did a Hard rock or Metal (if I remember right) version of Jefferson Airplanes White Rabbit. If my memory serves me right it woulda been mid to late 80s or 90s. I checked the box to be notified of followup comments and will be checkin back here periodically…
In the meantime I’m gonna shuffle on outta here and continue on my next search
Thanks so much. I was told that I would be “worshipped forever” if I could find this in MP3 format.
Wow!
I can’t believe there are actually 2 other people on this board who used to hear this song played on KTXT in Lubbock back in the 90s!
Small world!
I live in Houston now, but will always think of Lubbock when I hear that song!
Well well well, I’m glad I came upon this. This is Dj Teddy Bear from KGRG. This will be played on my morning show called A Guy and A Girl next week as part of Remember the 90′s segment. If you are interested, you can stream it live.
The show is on Mondays – Wednesdays from 6-9 am PST.
LOVE love love this song! It brings back memories of KTXT, staying up late listening to obscure music while studying. I am so glad you are sharing this!
Thank you!!
I too heard this on KGRG. One of my friends from waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back was a DJ there late, late at night during the late 90′s and, IIRC, would slip this one in from time to time when a spot was open.
Back in the day my roommates found a mysterious unlabeled cassette tape. They put it in and pressed Play. It was the Bongos Bass and Bob album, queued up to The Thorazine Shuffle.
It took us a few months to track down the band (the tape provided no clues) and eventually we found the vinyl and made MP3s from it.
This song became the theme song at our house, Bob’s Bar and Grill. “Good food, weird people.”
KTXT Played this one morning back in 2006 when I was headed for work in Lubbock. I enjoyed it From Clovis Highway to the Exit to Spur 327 along the West Loop. I later called up KTXT and they played it for me one Sat afternoon.
Miss KTXT and many things about Lubbock. Great town full of rich musical history.

I recently cracked out a box of cassette tapes. I came across an old recording from a college radio station of “the Thorazine Shuffle”. I recorded it many years ago. Thanks for posting it here for me to have digitally. I LOVE this song!
My girlfriend ripped off my blue vinyl copy of BB&B back in 1990… and I am still mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Curse my bad choices!
Put it back up! I was just telling my pharmacist wife about this song. I either heard it on KTRU in Houston or else on KTXT in Lubbock years ago.
It is bittersweet that a couple pf folks remember this song form KTXT in Lubbock Tx in the 90s. I went to Tech and was a DJ for the station for several years in the mid-90s and I loved this album and played the Thorazine shuffle occasionally on my late night shift. I also had a shift on Sat mornings for a bit and would play Oral Hygiene. It is sad the University shut down the station. My best college memories are from KTXT.
