Two Tons of Steel

When it comes to concert photography I find that candid shots tend to be the best. The performer caught in the act of plying his craft to a receptive audience.

That’s not to say that the artist is not “camera aware.” To the contrary, a good performer can play to the general audience and at the same time provide the photographer with dynamic and well presented subject matter.

Then there are times when the performer zeros in on the photographer without a mind or a concern for the general audience. These moments can have mixed results.

Sometimes the results are quite comical, as evidenced by this shot of drummer Chris Dodds:

Other times it is more dramatic like this shot of Kevin Geil:

Just a slight turn toward the side of the stage where I was working from and a tilt of the head and I get a partially illuminated face and a Texas flag for a back drop that ties in nicely with his cowboy attire. It was just a brief few seconds of interaction and then it was back to playing his show.
